New Milford Restaurant Inspection Scores

Courtesy of the New Milford Health Department, here are some recent and older scores.  The Department cautions that some data is missing due to the absence from its Office of the person who maintains the database.  Any score above an 80 is a passing grade but any 4 point violation is a failure so a facility may have a 96 or lower and fail. Thus, any grade above a 96 is a passing grade.  I suggested that the database include at least a "p" or "f" in the future.

If you want to know the facts about the grading system or any facility, please call the Health Department at (860) 350-6035.  Curiously, the Department is prohibited from giving out information about any facility that is closed because of a food-borne outbreak; seems to me that this is the very information that should be disseminated!  I'll check it out.

Thanks.

And it looks like the school cafeteria's are doing an awesome job.

You mean the public sector does better than the private sector.

I thought businesses were better at everything.;)

private businesses provide the schools food service

Isn't there a food service manager and secretary on the school payroll?

The lunch ladies are not school employees?

Great Job Salsa!!!

When people ask what do I get for my taxdollars, health inspections.

Occassionally you eat, right?

Or you could trust the restaurant.

I want a pothole and guardrail report for the town roads. I have seen guardrails down for almost a year now and NO there is no reason I should have to call it in to PW. They drive the roads everyday so if they missed it for almost a year now they should be fired.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the record winter, tornado, hurricane, tropical storm and snow storm put them behind schedule.

Thanks for managing to stay on the road for a whole year.

I have made it 12 years.

Who has the record?

I know it's not specifically on the driver's test, but I think staying on the paved portion of the road is preferrable.

I here they give extra points if you can do it while texting.

The guiderail budget for the town is $8500 for 207 miles of roads and 414 miles of road shoulder.

Discuss.

Potholes are like rocks; they come up each spring when you plow the fields.

Funny how my favorite restaurants have the lowest ratings.....

I just got a kick out of the comments about the guard/guide rail budget being low and potholes being like rocks in a field.

One person calls it a guardrail and another calls it a guiderail. Big difference from a liability standpoint. No question staying on the road is the best alternative while driving but since we all sometimes go astray, it's good to know something is there to help you. The question is if it has been a year that a rail has been missing, what happens to the unlucky person who takes the dive? What happens to the Town when they've had a year to fix something and haven't fixed it for whatever reason? If it goes to court, what would a judge think would be a reasonable excuse for the Town to not do what it is obligated to do? It all starts with the Town being on record that there is a problem and, no, Jay's site, no matter how riviting it is, is not the proper forum for reporting such matters. Once the "clock starts ticking" there better be a good reason for doing nothing. You would think the PW guys would be reporting all these things just for job security.

Potholes are not like rocks when the same pothole comes up every year. At least the farmer will reach an end to the frost-heaved boulders in time when they have all been removed. With the current Road budget that will never happen.

Well said chap, the problem has been addressed a long time ago with yellow caution tape. That tape is strong stuff ya know will keep all those buggies on the road it will. The problem is nothing has been done about it. So who is at fault there? I can point fingers all the way to the top. Is it the Mayors fault? Yes in some ways it is. No it is not her job to micromanage every department in town. But it is her fault for letting the people whose job it is to get the job done sit around and collect a check. I would hate to see someone get hurt because of an issue that was never addressed.

This date/time was determined by CL&P, a claim expert and Gov. Dannel Malloy.

In other words, the date/time was set so CL&P didn't exceed their $30 million they allocated.

There are two things I hate in life trolls and liars and you sir are a liar! I have to admit there are a lot of trolls here too.
Jay thanks for the postings!!!!

Hello 1:56PM

Huh?

Trolls and liars? Don't stop taking those meds, not this time of year....

Oh, thanks for the postings.....

Hi 6:32 PM
I am sorry you are projecting your drug abuse problem and dependencies on other people. There are a lot of liars that like to post on Jay’s blog. There are also a lot of trolls which are people who read posts and deliberately post negative comments to get a rise out of others.

I was also taking a second to thank Jay for posting the restaurant scores and other pertinent information relating to the town. But in the typical way of an internet troll you tried to steal my thunder.

…I suggested that the database include at least a "p" or "f" in the future...

Curiously, the Department is prohibited from giving out information about any facility that is closed because of a food-borne outbreak; seems to me that this is the very information that should be disseminated!

Hmmm... You'd think that hardworking, intelligent government bureaucrats would have figured out (all by themselves) that the inspection information they provided is meaningless without your suggested additions?

Unfortunately, government bureaucrats get paid to show up for "x" hours per day "y" days per year and meet the bare minimum requirements of their job descriptions. Nothing more. The prevailing attitude among government bureaucrats is that they don't get paid to do anything "extra" like anticipate the public's need for meaningful information or anything like that. Your experience with the health department is merely classic government bureaucratic inaction in action...

Hello 1:56PM,

Huh?

Thanks for the Peewee Herman response (... I know you are but what am I?) at 5:56. I thought it amusing. At least I now know what a troll is.

Oh, and Thanks Jay for posting what should be in the local newspaper.

Here is the story on the town side - ad infinitum.

government is anti-business when they enforce regulations that were set by elected officials for the health safety and welfare of the residents.

Government is too lax and not doing their job when they don't enforce regulations.
The public expects more for less.
They pay too much taxes.

No one offers any actual solutions.
So the status quo continues.

what is this I hear???? that Jay is the scrooge who got the Town Hall Holiday Office Decorating Contest cancelled!!

Anonymous said...

If he did I SWEAR I'll never read this blog again. I won't eat at Tivoli either.

Really, I don't give an Obama about this. But you can bet if there were hours and hours and days and days of union time at public works being spent on this I applaud him. Public works spoiled it for everybody. Town hall people do a wonderful thing.

Christmas spirit is one thing. People without jobs another. People with good paying jobs and abusing them at taxpayers expense is too much. Bravo!

Anonymous said...

Are you saying that public works employees were decorating on the clock rather than sitting in a truck on the side of a road somewhere? How, why could you insinuate such a thing? I think it is time for Mr. Hollins and sidekick to be shown to the door.
While we are on the subject of decorating how about we put some nice toppings on the potholes for holidays I would also recommend putting up some guiderail posts and stringing up some guide wire. I also see plenty of trash on the side of the road that needs to be cleaned up. That sounds more productive that decorating public works.
For people that think I might be a scrooge let me tell you I am. I liked the decorations at the town hall they were tasteful and I am sure that it did not take the hours to decorate.

just read in the DNT that mayor is having holiday open house at her office during staff working hours. How many town staff working hours are spent preparing for this event? How many town staff working hours are spent attending this event? if the office holiday decorating event is a concern to jay, how come the mayors's shindig is not?

Jay I hope you are not planning on showing your face at the mayors open house from 2-5 on Tuesday. I trust that the mayor and her four assistants are taking vacation time to host the event and also took vacation time to decorate and prepare for it and send out the invite. Jay please do us proud and foi this information for us so that you can ensure this is in fact the case. I mean wouldn't it seem a little I mean totally hypocritical of you to complain about the town department decorating contest being done on taxpayer time but not your girls party?!?! Typical republican. Oh that's right you are too busy posing for pictures in your buddies bird cage. I almost vomited when I drove by today and saw their new stonework is the cheap precast concrete blocks instead of the new england field stone and granite down the green. Can't say I was surprised though.

Double Standards the mayor-hater is back in town! 4 assistants? Not. nobody in town hall spends the amount of work hours on decorations that the pw guys were allowed by their supervisor , mr. hollins. It's disgraceful. Some holiday fun yes but not weeks and weeks of decorating instead of work. Off to work now bye.

Jay - gotta clean up the language on these posts. And I believe Mr. Zarba is ultimately responsible for how DPW staff use their time. What was going on last year was clearly visible to everyone at DPW - including Mr. Zarba. And ultimately, what harm did it cause? Employees with high morale and much more efficient. Let the Holiday Decorating Contest continue! This is Christmas, after all!

Anonymous said...

What harm did it cause? how many people don't have jobs and are suffering in this terrible economy? And you have the guts to ask this question? How much did this cost the taxpayers? Why should a bunch of well paid union guys who are guaranteed a check every friday get to spend hour days weeks fixing up a break room? THIS IS WASTE AT ITS WORST.

I am a taxpayer and I am a Christian. I celebrate Christmas and want everyone to enjoy the season. If employers in the private sector want to allow this that's fine but to allow dpw to do this to this extent is EXCESSIVE and wastefull. High moral and efficient. You are joking aren't you?

Anonymous said...

We don't have any details regarding how much "waste" actually occured. I am sure Jay has thoroughly investigated this and can provide this info, as well as information regarding the cost of the mayor's party, including staff time spent. Merry Christmas!

Anonymous said...

Every company I have ever worked for has had a Christmas Party planned and/or held on Company Time.

Why that double standard?
Yes, people are starving in Africa.
Yes, people are starving in North Korea.

The schools in Bridgeport aren't as good as ours.

The point is what?

Did the highway department deal with the record snow fall last January?
Did we have a tornado?
Did we have a hurricane and tropical storm?
And a snow storm in October?

Let them have Christmas because the weather forecast said it might rain/snow on Christmas eve.

While you are home tucked in your bed, blogging, I think the words you are looking for are,

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Please stay safe. God Bless and Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Anonymous said...

Yes , the words are God Bless and Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. These guys are PAID to do a good job. The problem is that the ones that don't get paid every friday anyway regardless. Of course there should be Christmas celebration but not weeks worth of time spent on it. Read again again and again and again if that's what it takes. Yes, allow them to celebrate Christmas.
None of the great people in town hall abuse the contest or their time. Poor management in public works lets them get away with this and everyone is afraid to say anything.

I dare you to find ANYONE in town hall wasting time. They are HARD WORKERS who earn their pay every day. They keep everything working. Have you watched a road crew recently when they aren't looking? The workday ends at 4. What time do you see them back at pw? Get a grip.

Anonymous said...

Double DD Standards you are right but you didn't make it clear which stone you are talking about. The stone that is going in around the atrium is fieldstone. The stone that is going around the parking lot is precast. Is the area beginning to look better? I think so. Still a lot of work to do.

Anonymous said...

3:47 thank you. At least someone knows the truth.

Anonymous said...

The truth! I have been telling the truth for years. Mr. Zarba does not care what Mr. Hollins does as long as the Mayor does not ask Mr. Zarba about the Public Work guys. Mr.Zarba does not care otherwise. Mr. Hollins does a lot of what Mr. Zarba should be doing which is partly why Mr. Hollins can get away with what he does.

Mr. Zarba is basically an over paid politician at this point.

As for the time decorating. A couple of hours for one or two people is one thing but when it gets to the extent that it did that is wasteful. I pay my taxes and I will not vote for the Mayor because of the waste within town departments.

Anonymous said...

this has gotten way out of hand. all i am saying is that the word on the street is that the office holiday decorating contest was cancelled due to a complaint by jay. just looking for the details. what happened to transparancy in our government? what are the details/basis for the complaint? if the complaint concerned a waste of town resources, why isn't that same standard being applied to the mayor's holiday party? three simple questions. jay, please answer and stop having the mayor's office staff get this discussion off point. thank you.

Anonymous said...

You people always complain and cry about everything dpw does. Why don't some of you that know everything are so perfect apply for those jobs and change something down there. Remember if your not part of the solution your part of the problem. Or are you people just to good to do that kind of work. Either way get a hobby and stop concerning yourselves with other peoples jobs.

Anonymous said...

I'll stop being concerned when I stop paying their salaries. I pay taxes, remember that.

I pay them also. So your preaching to the choir. But I don't complain about it or other people just trying to make a living.

That is the problem. when your living is derived from tax dollars you need to EARN it, not just make it by decorating and wasting time.

Pat - be true to yourself and kick Jay and Tommy out of your office - and give your employees a thanks and a hug this Christmas season - they won't know what hit them. A Christmas Carol was the answer.

----------------------------------
Despite the common opinion, Town employees do not work for the taxpayers. They work for the Town and therefore the Mayor. They are required to follow regulations and ordinances set or allowed by the legislative process.

You elect the Mayor.
Same as Town Council.
They decide what is generally done in Town. Some additional work is determined by the legislature in Hartford and your federal government.

And voter's decide big expenses like sewer plants and ambulance barns.

Notable examples you are apparently also against:

- decorating the street lights downtown.
- electrcity on the green for the Christmas trees.
- The schools are off for religious holidays.
- the town provides barricades for every event on the green.

Why are these public expenses?
Because the public approves of them.

Majority rules or the person elected rules. Either way as ONE taxpayer/voter you have technically have 1/13000 of a say.

While in reality you have 1/3000 of a say but the 10,000 people who don't vote indirectly voted for the majority.

Democracy is fun.
But it beats everything else.

You must be a graduate of NMHS because what you wrote is absolutely DUMB. Do you know what a non sequitur is? I thought not. Do you know how government works? I thought not. I can't spend the time to address all your inanities but one.

All town employees are required to put in a solid day's work. There isn't an employee in Town Hall who doesn't do this and more. This is not true of too many of the unsupervised, undisciplined, unmanaged public works employees. What a joke.

Anonymous said...

December 21, 2011 5:09 PM

Why should government tell me what to do on my property?

My answer is safety.
Do I care if Tivoli has a birdcage or fake stone or a yellow sign?
No.

Do I care if their food is "safe" - yes.
Do I care if their sprinkler system is tested and passes?
Yes.
Do I care that improvements were made to the building code? Yes.

Do I want them to enforce the no smoking laws? Yes.

It's like talking on your cellphone. I could care less if you run off the road and total your car. But I drive places. So, I'd prefer to get their safely.

why did all 3 town engineers have to waste taxpayer dollars standing around listening to chris murphy's dribble yesterday? why are our conn gas tax dollars sent to washington so they can be sent back to pay for conn bridge repairs? why is the federal government involved in fixing state bridges? sounds like a bunch of money wasted on unnecessary government.

jbk said...

because government is much, much larger than originally envisioned.

it all started with government entitlements during the depression and has never looked back.

the bigger an entity is, the more room for slop and waste

this is where we are now

Anonymous said...

Bridge safety, repairs and replacements is a partisan issue?

Anonymous said...

December 30, 2011 7:01 AM

Technically there are three engineers but only two of them work. So I see even more tax dollars wasted there.

Anonymous said...

who said anything about bridge repairs being a partisian issue? both dems and r's should be concerned about government waste.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it wasteful to let a bridge fall down?

It's cheaper to run a used car than buy a new car.

Or do I have to buy pontoons for my car to cross rivers?

Anonymous said...

If you're waiting for a bridge to fall, don't worry, the Old Boardman Bridge will soon be in the drink.

BTW - 3 engineers, or 10 engineers, they all are paid salaries so standing anywhere for anytime doing anything does not cost any more or less. Their time could have been spent on a less drivolous political event but whatever it takes to get a better bridge needs to be done.

Bureaucracy invites the dogs and ponies. Live with it or do something about it.

Anonymous said...

the point is, keep our tax dollars in the state and use them to fix our bridges rather than send them to washington to be churned and paying some agency a cut to oversee their redistribution!!!!! why do we have 3 town engineers who we pay salary to who waste our taxpayer dollars standing around? couldn't 2 have done the job as good as one? there does not seem to be any accountability as to how their time is spent! you think having 3 there rather than 1 or 2 will work better to get the town a bridge fixing grant? the problem with our country is that people think this is ok! stop the waste in government!!! we need to start with trimming the mayor's office and public works as those departments both spend too much time on photo ops!

Anonymous said...

Are you saying the town, state and federal government don't need to fix the bridge?
Structurally deficient and functionally obsolete?

If not that bridge, what bridge?

Anonymous said...

please reread. you are not getting it.

Which bridge? The bridge on Gaylord Rd. needs repair. Go take a look under it. It is missing key Steel I beams to support the bridge. Maybe they have started to fix it but it has been that way for years. I would go look but I live on the other side of town.

"We do in fact have a decreasing condition of bridges," said Thomas Harley, the DOT's chief engineer. Because the state has not dedicated the necessary cash needed to keep up with regular maintenance, Harley said the list of needed repairs has grown.

Malloy, who is approaching his first year in office, blames the growth in the number of poor bridges and the maintenance needs on past administrations he believes scrimped.

"That's quite clearly what happened," he said. "Simply put, not enough money went into transportation, really for the last 15 years, and I hope to attack that issue very aggressively in the coming years."

Anonymous said...

January 2, 2012 10:47 AM

http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Towns-costs-for-storm-debris-removal-vary-2439335.php

Apparently our dumb mayor is the only Local mayor who can't do basic math. 28000 cubic yards x $30 per cubic yard does not equal, "about $550,000.". I guess that is how politicians get away with things. Just use words like about, approximately, maybe and a real number of $840000 shrinks to 550000 for the local newspaper. Let's not get in to how she doesn't support local business. Imagine if local companies were hired instead of some national company that overcharged us. We could have gotten it done for less and injected a bunch of money in to the local economy. I guess that makes too much sense.

Anonymous said...

I must say i really enjoyed getting caught up on Jay's blog just now. Very entertaining! One other thing to keep in mind, the town may have had to use the out of state contractors anyway to clean up the storm debris because all the local guys are still pretty overwhelmed with work. But I am thinking the DPW guys probably could have done the job. I haven't seen any road projects underway lately - come to think of it - i haven't seen any DPW guys lately anywhere. Where have they been? I also haven't seen any NMPD guys around. Where have they been?

What else do we need?

My wish - More transparency in our town government. Don't know how the mayor gets away with some of the crap that goes on from hiring contractors to do town work at exorbitant expense to the town as well as hiring contractors who owe back taxes on properties they own in town. Also trying to sell town property at ridiculously low prices without marketing it or trying in any way to see if someone else will pay a higher price. Enough of the arrogance!
