Well at least neither of these residents look like Hannibal Lectore!
That's a start.

Thanks!

Jay, you and Tom bet on the wrong horse in this race. It is out of place in a New England Village Center. Just awful next to the village green. Shocking decision from zoning.

The thing is atrocious. Only art howlands building looks worse. I will no longer eat there. It is a disgrace to the village center.

Amazing that in an uncontested election over 25% of the voters didn't support the mayor even though she was unopposed. I wonder if some of that has to do with her and her republican cronies having all their parties there. I hear they have a Xmas party coming up there and Pilla is telling them to show up if they know what is good for them to support the steel cage or else he is going to go all george the animal steel on them. Whatcha gonna do when Tommy Pilla and his republican cronies run wild on you... Brother!!!!!

I bet you didn't pay for those drinks.

how appropriate to have art howland's building in the background! Jay, you are a genius!

People should worry about job creation, raises, healthcare, education...

4 extra tables means at least an extra waitstaff person.

One more employed person is good. Or extra hours for the existing staff is good.

Maybe the town should hire a town planner to protect the character of town.

There another job created.
Maybe Paul Szymanski can be the town planner since he's facebook friends of oppose the bird cage.

Anonymous said...

The town zoning officer has a masters degree in planning. Why not just make her the Town Planner?

Anonymous said...

Because part of that position requires positive interaction with the public and encouragement to bring your business here. She does just the opposite.

ouch!

Regulations are supposed to be unfriendly to businesses.
Otherwise we'd have slums, tenements, pollution, dangerous cars, dangerous products...

Relying on businesses to police themselves is exactly the economic mess we are in.
For example outsourcing, if one does it, they all do it.

How have your raises looked recently? Do you like competing against 6 billion other people for work? Most of whom don't have running water/proper sanitation(wait another unnecessary regulation) or safe buildings to live in(Haiti, Chile, Turkey,...).

huh?

It was a response to the 3:58 comment.

The disrespect of public officials is like yelling at a cop for enforcing the law.

The ZEO doesn't make the laws. The commission does. Sounds like sour grapes from an applicant trying to skirt the system.

Anonymous said...

Really? Like yelling at a cop? I don't think so.

The ZEO told me "go read the regs" just like that. Why would I want to move my business to New Milford if this is how I am treated. Mayor Pat Murphy and Vin Nolan tried their best later but there's no second chance for a first impression is there?

Anonymous said...

Isn't it your obligation to know the regulations?

The Zoning ENFORCEMENT Officer is not your lawyer, your engineer or your permit expeditor.

Anonymous said...

I'd add regulations are there to protect visitors, guests, children, and not for the convenience of business owners.
Business owners should want to build the safest, healthiest, energy efficient, and best circulation they can.

Right?
Or just slap it in?

You are a moron! I tried to find a less derogatory word for you and your statement but non fit so well. Regulations are NEVER supposed to be unfriendly to any one! They are to be guidelines for citizens to achieve the community and lifestyle they commonly desire. That very attitude of "all businesses are evil so punish them all" has got to be rooted out and done away with in this town if we are ever going to move past the moron thinking you so dearly embrace.

Businesses are interested in their budget and their profit only.
Otherwise it would be a non-profit.

Do you think Enron or Lehman Brothers or Merrill Lynch cared one bit about making the world a better place?

Ditto in New Milford, no one wants to follow regulations because it costs too much money.

Regulations are the community guidance and are supposed to be ENFORCED.

If you don't like a regulation, get it changed, but if it's in place the public has spoken.

Anonymous said...

It is possible balance enforcement of the regulations with being helpful. If our town zoning staff is going to say "read the regulations" when someone asks for help, perhaps we only need minimal staffing in that office - just to go out and look for infractions of the zoning laws. Employees of the Town of New Milford are compensated very well for their service to the town. They should, in return, be responsive and helpful to residents of the town, as well as businesses looking to expand or move to the town - as this in turn benefits our town. There is no reason the zoning staff, or for that matter, building fire marshal, health department, public works as well as the police department cannot be helpful and courteous in their day to day role upholding regulations, laws and codes, as well as assisting citizens and businesses or our town to thrive.

And business owners do NOT just care about their profit. They care about their reputation and the town and want the town to be a great place to live and work. Just because they own a business in town does not make them evil. Some of you sound like you should be hanging out with the clueless occupiers. Your statements are overly broad and have no relevance to this local discussion.

sorry for they typos - should have proofread!

And here I thought it was a stripper cage, finally a reason to go to the New Milford green, Boo. Who the hell would want to sit in a bird cage and eat?

Anonymous said...

I agree the town staff should be enforcing the regulations, but instead apparently, you want them in the office offering free consultation on your project.

Why should the taxpayer pay for free advice when you could pay for your own attorney, engineer, or professional?

Well paid, the ZEO makes $59K/year.
The median income in town is what.
Don't you want your staff to be better paid than median income?

I guarantee fortune 500 companies pay their employees more than the median average.

Jay and Tommy were there with a woman sitting at a table. I guess they have the dubious distinction of being the first.

could somebody post a link to the oppose the birdcage facebook page please?

I'm not thankful for Tivolis and the crony republicans who have all of their events there shoving this ugly ass eyesore down our throats. I hear they are now having their Christmas party there too. Wonder if they are even being charged for it or is it payback for shoving this iron disaster through the republican controlled zoning commission.

Anonymous said...

I have no doubt that you attended one of the meetings of the zoning commission and spoke against it, right?

and no doubt you have a bone to pick with the greenspans who recommended this to the zoning commission?

There are 62 friends, which is about 32 more than Jeff Winter for Mayor had.

What I find interesting is as trivial as the bird cage is, I see a lot of the next generation of leaders on the friends list.

It's easy to be an opponent, what should have been put up there for extra seating?

We need to start protecting Route 7.

The place next to Bennitt Chevrolet looks pretty shabby.

Route 7 by Willow Springs doesn't need a traffic light. It needs lighting. They have a sidewalk to the road that is totally unlit.
Someone ran out in front of me when there wasn't a car behind me for 1/4 mile.

What should have been put there was some nice landscaping to complement the green. How many more tables do they need. Looks like the republicans brought bourbon street to new Milford. when will Pilla and Lewin start throwing out beads from the bourbon st bird cage?

I must be doing something wrong. I still can't find the posted facebook page even after doing a search. Help, please.

This link worked for me, but something wonky may happen if you cut & paste.

I found it. It was a bit silly - not very informative and a lot of swearing.

I have to admit, I am so pleased that Tivoli’s is doing well enough to want to expand- especially in these economic times. My question however is the building in which they chose to expand into. Perhaps in a different setting the “birdcage”, as people are referring to it, would not look so ostentatious, or grandiose. It might fit in lovely in Victorian England or New Orleans, but it does not fit in well with the look of the Village Green. Instead the look they have achieved is small beautiful picturesque downtown green turns into a circus show with cages at local restaurant. I know the Zoning board played by the rules, there was no valid reason for denying it. Yes, it is ugly, yes it is large, yes it mars the village but it fits where it needs to fit and does what it needs to do. There are no statutes for taste. The Zoning board can only do so much but even they have parameters in which to work. The sign that Tivoli has placed up is a perfect example of that. They cannot refuse something on the colors or the wording if all the other rules are followed. I believe that the owner probably chose those garish sign colors to gather attention to the restaurant and the parking they are so lucky to have. However, what it did was cheapen the restaurant and made it look tacky. The sign and the “cage” are certainly bringing attention to Tivoli, but is the attention that the owners wanted? As the saying goes, any publicity is good publicity, but does this restaurant really want to be talked about in such a manner? I can only hope that the other businesses on the Green have taken this all into consideration and when they are planning a change that they try to keep it within the spirit of the Green’s natural look.

Mikki, you add some class to this page by posting your opinion without grossness. Thanks. I may disagree with you but heck that doesn't make either of us stupid or wrong.

Why don't you all wait until the project is completed before you criticize! It might end up looking beautiful. I feel sorry for the owners. I'm sure they are being affected by all this bad talk.
